Beating Mould in a Humid Climate: A Room-by-Room Guide

With relative humidity sitting between 70% and 90% most of the year, Kuala Lumpur is practically a spa for mould spores. They need three things to colonise: moisture, still air and something organic to eat. Deny them any one of the three and they can’t get started. Here’s how to do that in each room, based on what our crews see week after week.

Bathrooms: the front line

The single biggest difference-maker costs nothing: squeegee or towel-dry the shower walls after the last shower of the day. Standing droplets on tile and silicone are where colonies begin. Keep the door ajar and the exhaust fan running for twenty minutes afterwards. If your bathroom has no window and no fan, a small dehumidifier pays for itself within months in avoided regrouting.

For existing spotting on silicone sealant, a paste of sodium percarbonate left for an hour outperforms most sprays — and skip the myth about vinegar on natural stone, which etches it permanently.

Bedrooms and wardrobes

Enclosed wardrobes against exterior walls are quiet trouble spots. Leave a two-finger gap between the wardrobe back and the wall, and don’t pack clothes to full compression — air needs to move. Rechargeable dehumidifier boxes or silica pouches in each section help, but they only work if you actually recharge them. Set a monthly phone reminder.

Kitchens

Mould in kitchens usually starts under the sink around a slow drip, or in the cabinet housing the water filter. Check both with a torch once a month. Wipe cabinet interiors dry after any leak and leave doors open overnight to finish the job.

Air conditioning: the hidden garden

If a room smells musty only when the aircon starts, the mould is inside the unit — on the blower wheel and fins, not your walls. A chemical service every six to twelve months clears it. Running the fan-only mode for ten minutes before switching off also lets the coil dry instead of sitting wet overnight.

When to stop DIY-ing

Patches larger than an A4 sheet, mould returning within weeks of cleaning, or any growth on porous surfaces like plasterboard and MDF are signs the moisture source needs professional attention — treatment without fixing the source is just a subscription to the problem.
